Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources, Prof. Judy Wakhungu, will be officiating in the morning when the Conservation Alliance of Kenya is formally launched at the Nairobi Serena Hotel.

More than 50 of Kenya’s leading conservation NGO’s have come together to provide a link between government, the Kenya Wildlife Service – recently under heavy criticism over the killing of one of Nairobi National Park’s most iconic lions, Mohawk – but also communities, scientists and the international conservation fraternity.

The new body will be able to speak with one voice and articulate concerns much more effectively, when the fist comes down on the table as opposed to the efforts, no matter how valiant, of smaller NGO’s.
United we stand clearly was the overriding principle which led to the formation of the CAK and with real heavyweights among the membership this new body will be no pushover.

The launch date too is significant as it is now only weeks to the biggest ivory burn ever, when Kenya will destroy over 105 tons of ivory from the country’s strongrooms and put it beyond use, unlike some other African countries which in their wisdom still try to get permits to sell off ivory stocks on the open market or otherwise resist destroying all or part of their blood ivory.
