At 02:30:07 UTC on April 1, 2016, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the Western Honshu coast of Japan. Honshu is a top tourist attraction in Japan.
The government had just announced this week that an emergency response plan will see up to 140,000 Self-Defense Forces personnel, firefighters, and police offers from around Japan dispatched to the Tokyo metropolitan area should a magnitude 7-class earthquake directly hit the capital.
The plan was revised from one drawn up in 2008, reflects estimates of potential damage from such a quake that were upgraded following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan.
Todayโs quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at the following distances:
โข 56 km (34 mi) SE of Shingu, Japan
โข 79 km (48 mi) SSE of Owase, Japan
โข 105 km (65 mi) ESE of Tanabe, Japan
โข 125 km (77 mi) SSW of Ise, Japan
โข 395 km (244 mi) SW of Tokyo, Japan
There have been no reports of damages or injuries.
