The government had just announced this week that an emergency response plan will see up to 140,000 Self-Defense Forces personnel, firefighters, and police offers from around Japan dispatched to the Tokyo metropolitan area should a magnitude 7-class earthquake directly hit the capital.

The plan was revised from one drawn up in 2008, reflects estimates of potential damage from such a quake that were upgraded following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan.

Todayโ€™s quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at the following distances:

โ€ข 56 km (34 mi) SE of Shingu, Japan
โ€ข 79 km (48 mi) SSE of Owase, Japan
โ€ข 105 km (65 mi) ESE of Tanabe, Japan
โ€ข 125 km (77 mi) SSW of Ise, Japan
โ€ข 395 km (244 mi) SW of Tokyo, Japan

There have been no reports of damages or injuries.
