LGBT Hawaii is is extending a special welcome to all LGBT travelers from North Carolina to visit the Aloha State to feel safe and at home.
Late Monday afternoon, March 29, the LGBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaiโi (DPH), Hawaiiโs oldest and largest LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) political organization, sent letters to Governor David Ige and the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Kirk Caldwell, asking them to issue government travel bans for all public employees under their jurisdiction.
The request for the travel ban comes on the heels of Governor Pat McCrory of North Carolina signing a bill into law that bars all municipalities in the Tar Heel state from passing non-discrimination laws that protect the LGBT community. The law was hastily passed after the city of Charlotte passed a law protecting the LGBT community from discrimination. Yesterday the mayors of San Francisco, Seattle, and New York City along with the Governor of New York issued their own travel bans for their respective public employees.
โWe have called upon Governor Ige and Mayor Caldwell to protect our public employees that may have to travel to North Carolina on taxpayer funded business. No public employee should be put in harms way unnecessarily, nor should they have to lose the protections that Hawaiiโs inclusive non-discrimination laws provide to them when they travel on official business.โ said Michael Golojuch, Jr. chair of the LGBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaiโi, โWe should not be spending taxpayer dollars to support a state that has gone out of its way to discriminate against the LGBT community.โ
On May 2, 2015 at their annual County Convention the Oโahu County Democrats passed resolution OC 2015-04 – Protecting Public Employees While Advocating for Inclusive Non-Discrimination Policies, which advocates for such travel bans.
