German tourist among 15 dead in Istanbul after terror attack

Today is a blow to Istanbul tourism and the Turkish travel and tourism industry. Istanbul police sealed off the Hippodrome area of historic Sultanahmet Square after a loud explosion was heard earlier today and at a time the square was busy with tour groups from all over the world. Shortly after the explosion ambulances were racing in and out.

A suicide bomber had blown himself up near a group of foreign tourists in this central Istanbul square. Local media report say 10 people are dead, 15 injured. A German tourist died in the attack. This was not yet confirmed by German authorities. Sources say among the injured are tourists from Germany, Norway, Peru, and South Korea. None of this is yet officially confirmed. All dead and injured had been transported to local hospitals.

Local media reports suggest there may have been several explosions.
It’s one of the top squares in the Turkish city on the Bosporus and usually packed with tourists and locals. An explosion has rocked Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul, Turkey.

Sultanahmet Square is the oldest part of Istanbul, and the location of most of its historical sights.

In the meantime German authorities urged it’s citizen to avoid crowds in public places and tourist attractions.
