The 25th South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) Council of Ministers of Tourism meeting will be held on October 15, 2015 in Papeete, Tahiti.
Tahiti Tourisme and the SPTO are well into preparations for the meeting, which will be held at the Le Meridian Tahiti resort following the SPTO Board of Directors meeting.
The Council of Ministers Meeting is held annually in a member country that bids to host the meeting, bringing together the Island States to share and discuss common issues and policy matters of mutual interests for the development of the tourism sector within the region.
The forum aims to provide Ministers with the opportunity to follow-up on progress of key regional tourism marketing activities and development work and to provide strategic directions for the development of the tourism industry in the Pacific Islands.
Sixteen of the eighteen member countries are anticipated to attend the meeting, where several Heads of States, Tourism Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Senior Tourism Officials will start arriving to Papeete this weekend for the meeting.
The President of New Caledonia Harold Martin, the deputy Prime Minister of Vanuatu Moana Carcasses and the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands Henry Puna are some of the dignitaries that will attend the 25th session.
SPTO Chief Executive, Ilisoni Vuidreketi, said the annual meeting is important for the growth and development of tourism in the Pacific region.
“An important component of this year’s meeting is the tabling of the Pacific Cruise Tourism Development Strategy (PCTDS) 2015-2019 which once approved will propel the Pacific cruise industry to reach its full potential,” he stated.
“Other policy matters with regards to the SPTO constitution as well as the advocacy role played by SPTO in the region will also be discussed at the meeting”, he added.
Mr. Vuidreketi said the Ministers will also hear from the Association of South Pacific Airlines (ASPA) on Enhancing Regional Air Connectivity in the Pacific.
