ROME, Italy – A group of British tourists are facing charges of obscenity in Rome after allegedly skinny dipping in one of the city’s historic fountains.
The four men and two women are said to have been drinking in the city when they suddenly decided to go for a dip in the Fountain of the Naiads in the city center.
According to police, the group stripped nude and dived into the fountain at around 6am on Sunday morning.
Officers from the municipal police arrived while the tourists aged 25-49 were in the water and invited them to get out and cover up.
They were issued fines and accused of an obscene act in a public place.
The scandalous episode comes as Italians work themselves into lather after a summer of loutishness and bad behavior by tourists.
In July three American tourists were arrested after taking a swim in the city’s monumental Bernini fountains in Piazza Navona.
Italian minister for Culture Dario Franceschini has said that Italy wants to upgrade the calibre of its visitors and focus on ‘elite’ tourists.
Last week a Austrian woman was arrested for carving her initials into the Colosseum, one of around half-a-dozen this year.
