A Japanese tourist who had been hiking all day near Mauna Loa Observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii, got lost when the summit was suddenly struck by heavy rains and strong winds.
The hiker called for help from a cell phone and was found by the Hawaii County Fire Department at around 8:15 p.m. about a mile and a half from the observatory.
He was suffering from exhaustion and hypothermia, as the temperature had dropped into the low 50s after the weather changed. He was treated at Hilo Medical Center.
