Starting on May 4 next year, British Airways will offer nonstop flights between Gatwick and the Costa Rican capital of San Jose.

Customers will initially be able to fly twice a week during the summer, rising to three a week in the winter, in comfort and style to San Joseโ€™s Santamaria International Airport direct from Gatwick, on British Airwaysโ€™ Boeing 777 fleet.

Colm Lacy, British Airwaysโ€™ head of commercial Gatwick, said: โ€œWith everything from its incredible wildlife, rugged rainforests and volcanic peaks, as well as stunning beaches and โ€“ of course โ€“ world-famous coffee โ€“ Costa Rica offers an incredible array of places to visit and experience.

โ€œAdding Costa Rica to our wide range of flights from Gatwick boosts our network and gives customers an even greater choice of diverse destinations.

โ€œWeโ€™re very excited to have the opportunity to fly nonstop between London and San Jose and weโ€™re sure this route will prove very popular with those looking for a holiday thatโ€™s definitely out of the ordinary.โ€

Each of the new twice weekly flights will offer 48 seats for customers travelling in Club World, 24 in World Traveller Plus and 203 in World Traveller.

With stylish cabin interiors and on-demand in-flight entertainment, British Airways also offers free in-flight dining, a full service bar and a generous baggage allowance.

Mauricio Ventura, Costa Ricaโ€™s minister of tourism said: โ€œBritish Airwaysโ€™ new service from Costa Rica to the United Kingdom is wonderful news and demonstrates the success of our strategy to attract premium airlines to our country. โ€œIn the last 12 months alone we have seen an increase of 12.9 percent of tourists from the United Kingdom visiting Costa Rica, staying an average of two weeks, helping to make a valuable contribution to the Costa Rican economy. Europe is a priority market for Costa Rica. โ€œSo the start of this new route by British Airways will help attract tourists from across Europe, and specifically from the United Kingdom, making it much easier for them to visit all the wonderful places Costa Rica has to offer modern holiday-makers.โ€
