The accident happened near Remba, a tiny island in the middle of Lake Victoria, known as “Slum Island.”

A few thousand people, mainly fishermen, make their home on this busy outpost on the border between Uganda and Kenya. One-room shacks are the norm here, and the fishermen almost literally live on top of each other: they share shacks, with one group sleeping in the day while the other fishes, and then they swap at night.

With a surface area of 68,800 square kilometres (26,600 sq mi), Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake by area, and is also the largest tropical lake in the world. Lake Victoria is the world’s second largest freshwater lake by surface area.

Since the 1900s, Lake Victoria ferries have been an important means of transport between Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. The main ports on the lake are Kisumu, Mwanza, Bukoba, Entebbe, Port Bell and Jinja.

If tourists were on this boat is unknown at this time.
