You are visiting Hawaii and you’re hungry for Hawaiian Sun Papaya Pineapple Jam?

You are visiting Hawaii and you’re hungry for Hawaiian Sun Papaya Pineapple Jam? What about buying some Hawaiian Sun Papaya Pineapple Jam for your family and friends back home so they will suffer food poisoning from products you bought in the Aloha State?

Reading a review on Amazon, Dianne Cardillo posted: Love it! She gave Sun Papaya Pineapple Jam Five Stars. You may actually be better off to buy this delicious product on Amazon.

Foodland Hawaii is a leading grocery chain with stores on all Hawaiian islands. When checking a Foodland Hawaii store on the Island of Oahu and with a large food and souvenir section including also Hawaiian Sun Products, a number of exotic jam flavors were put on sale. Foodland offered this Hawaiian treat on a 2-for-1 basis. Buy 2, pay the price of one. If the deal sounds too good to be true – this one was.

My advice to a tourist ready to buy: “Please look twice.”

On the jam bottles for sale on Foodland’s shelf, the expiration date printed in small letters was from 2014. Most bottles showed expiration dates in early 2015, and only 2 out of 20 had current dates in 2015, one had a 2016 date.

Expiration date April 1, 2015 on sale on August 1, 2015

Expiration date February 8.2014 on sale on August 1, 2015

The clerk tried to explain there was no expiration date.

The manager however agreed, apologized, and took the large selection of expired Hawaiian Sun products off the shelf.

My tip for our visitors: Avoid getting sick in paradise and consider buying your “fresh Hawaiian products” at home!

After thinking about it again, perhaps there is a second version to this story. The Foodland store I visited and saw the expired products was in Mililani. Mililani is a town in the center of the island of Oahu. Not too many tourists visit this town, unless they stop on a circle island tour.

To make sure, I drove to Foodland Pupukea, a major tourism spot on the North Shore of Oahu and checked again. All expiration dates on the jam bottles were 2016 and later.

Perhaps Foodland was targeting local customers shifting spoiled products to Mililani and putting them on sale?
