The latest TV spot says, “Etihad Airways: Connecting sports fans everywhere”.

It all started in 2013 when UAE’s national airline carrier Etihad Airways invested in the Georgetown Cupcake bakery and promoted the U.S. Capital as a travel and tourism destination in the United Arab Emirates during the Arabian Travel Market 2013 in Dubai. Georgetown Cupcake was baking and gave out delicious cakes at ATM. Etihad Airways invited Destination DC to promote Washington as a travel destination to exhibitors from all over the Gulf region. At the same time Etihad was celebrating its launch of non stop air service between the two capital cities Abu Dhabi and Washington DC.

Two years later a legacy partnership that Includes three professional sports teams โ€“ Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics โ€“ and Verizon Center has been announced today by the airline and Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

With the Open Sky agreement between the USA and the United Arab Emirates under attack by airlines including United, American and Delta, this strategic move by Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the UAE is brilliant.

When reaching out to Kate Gibbs, Media Relations Manager of Destination DC, she did not want to comment or say if this move is a reason to celebrate.

In the meantime Etihad Airways just came out with an announcement announcing it signing a legacy partnership agreement with Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) to become the exclusive airline partner of the Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Mystics (WNBA) and Verizon Center.

Etihad Airways will receive a variety of branding opportunities, be featured in numerous multimedia programming and work collaboratively with MSE on several community initiatives to promote and celebrate the international nature of sport in Washington, D.C., and Abu Dhabi.

โ€œThis relationship is a sign of our long-term commitment to the Washington, D.C., market, which we have been serving since 2013,โ€ said James Hogan, president and chief executive officer of Etihad Airways.

โ€œWe are proud to announce this partnership, just as we are proud to connect the two capital cities of Washington, D.C., and Abu Dhabi.

โ€œOur daily flights allow American travelers to reach more than 60 cities around the world, flying the worldโ€™s leading airline on Boeing 787 Dreamliners, as well as bringing thousands of business travelers and tourists to the U.S. every week.โ€

The MSE partnership builds upon Etihad Airwaysโ€™ U.S. sports sponsorship portfolio within which the airline is official airline partner of Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Nationโ€™s Triathlon, which takes place each year in Washington, D.C.

โ€œEtihad Airways is a prestigious international brand known for its hospitality, service and global reach,โ€ said Ted Leonsis, founder, chairman and majority owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

โ€œAs a legacy partner, Etihad Airways provides that official connection to our diverse and international community and the growing interest in sports worldwide. Our teams are international, our players are international, our city is international and our partnership with Etihad builds on those commonalities.โ€

Washington, D.C., is a global hub for travel with three international airports and 500 international flights each week serving 64 million passengers per year. The nationโ€™s capital is also one of six American cities served daily by Etihad Airways from its home-base in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

โ€œEtihad Airways embraces the growth and popularity of basketball and hockey worldwide and is committed to driving brand awareness for sports on an international scale,โ€ said Raul Fernandez, vice chairman of Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

โ€œThe Capitals, Wizards and Mystics enjoy such a cross-cultural roster and playing at Verizon Center is an experience found nowhere else but in the heart of the nationโ€™s capital.โ€

Etihad Airways proudly supports Manchester City Football Club; New York City Football Club; the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; the Mumbai Indians cricket team of the Indian Premier League; Etihad Stadium and Melbourne City Football Club; the England and Wales Cricket Board; and the GAA Hurling All Ireland Senior Championship.

The addition of the Washington Mystics to the Etihad Airways sponsorship portfolio bolsters the airlineโ€™s commitment to promoting womenโ€™s sport, fitness, health and well-being, which has been popular among its more than 8,200 female employees across 144 different nationalities.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment is one of the largest integrated sports and entertainment companies in the country with one of the most diverse partnership groups in all of sports.
