The UK foreign office is warning British tourists planning to travel to the Southern European Country of Macedonia. Foreign visitors should take particular care if you travel to the northern and western border regions of Macedonia.
On May 9 Macedonian police engaged in an operation to arrest members of an armed group in Kumanovo, a town 40 km northeast of Skopje. There was fighting which allegedly resulted in casualties. There is a heavy police presence in the vicinity of Kumanovo and difficulties moving in and out of the town, although the road from Skopje to the border with Serbia is open, as is the border. People should avoid the area while the operation is continuing.
Since February 2015, there has been a political crisis involving the government and opposition. There have been protests, involving some violence, in central Skopje and other towns in Macedonia. These could last through May and beyond. The leader of the opposition has called for citizens to protest on Sunday 17 May in Skopje.
