During the assembly phase, this new airport terminal was known as the “Temporary Terminal.” That all ends now as the prefabricated structure will from this morning onwards see a progressive transfer of domestic and regional flights.

The Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) yesterday announced the official opening and start for the new Terminal 2, which is shifting flights from their present terminals 1B, 1C, and 1D, formerly known as Unit 2 and Unit 3.

First to depart and arrive in the new facility will be Kenya Airways, which has been given the honor to be the proverbial launch customer, when flight KQ 640 will check in for Malindi and then return from there as KQ 641.

Second will be flight 5H 408 by Fly540 from Kisumu, while their service coming in from Juba as 5H 722 will be the third flight to be processed in the new terminal.

Passengers on domestic flights out of and into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport are advised to remain in close touch with their travel agents and the respective airlines, or else monitor announcements made by the Kenya Airport Authority about which flights will next be shifted to the new facility. This is important as passengers arriving late for check in at Terminal 1D may then struggle to make it to the new Terminal 2 and still meet the 1-hour deadline before flights are closed. Those flying on LCCs in fact could lose their seat and may have to purchase a new ticket, reason enough to stay informed about which flights will in coming days be moved to T2 for handling.

It is understood that passengers arriving on international flights and connecting to domestic or regional services operating from T2, and vice versa, will be provided with a KAA shuttle service between Arrivals, Terminal 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D in both directions, but it is advisable to ensure sufficient transit time between flights to guarantee the onward connection.
