CAIRO, Egypt – The number of tourists visiting Egypt rose by 79.5 percent in October compared to the same month in 2013, according to the latest official figures.
Egypt welcomed nearly a million foreign tourists in October, compared to 558,700 in the same period of the previous year, state-owned statistics agency CAPMAS reported on Wednesday.
The Egyptian tourism industry has shown signs of recovery in recent months after three years of political turmoil and militant attacks dealt the sector a series of blows.
Several European countries have lifted their warnings against travel to Egypt, imposed in February when a bomb near a tour bus in South Sinai killed three South Koreans and their Egyptian driver and raised concerns about safety in Red Sea resorts.
The number of nights tourists spent in Egypt in October increased some 151 percent to 9.8 million, compared to 3.9 million nights during the same month of the previous year.
Egypt’s tourism revenue sank by 41 percent to $5.9 billion in 2013 compared to a year earlier.
Egypt welcomed a total of some 14.7 million tourists in 2010, before the countyrโs 2011 revolution. By 2013 this number had shrunk to 9.5 million.
