Reunion Island is known for a great many outdoor activities and adventure sports but less so for golfing, even though three major courses are found on the island and offer visitors the opportunity to mingle with local fans of the game. Starting this morning and running until December 17, the Open Double Championship will be played for the first time ever on the island, no doubt giving it a major boost to promote the island in key markets where golfing vacations are a hot-selling item.
The three courses on which the various tournaments and finally the championship will be played are:
โข Blue Basin Golf has 18 holes, more selective and more strategic on the island. Between steep ravines and eucalyptus forest, the course offers a panoramic view of the west, and the Indian Ocean.
โข Bourbon Course is the oldest on the island. Located in the heart of the sandy forest, Etang-Salรฉ, it offers an 18-hole perfectly flat terrain.
โข The Colorado Golf is perched 600 meters above sea level. Only 9 holes on the island, its course is very hilly and requires a great technique.
The latter two courses have incidentally been described as ball gobblers with several of the holes played across deep gullies and ravines which can easily be draining the ball supply players have brought along.

Also available is a one-minute YouTube teaser video which gives those who cannot be on Reunion Island for the event at least some idea of what they are missing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Evt26RjH4as
The event brings a major golfing competition back to Reunion Island for the first time in a decade, making it a memorable occasion for the local golfers and people at large on the island, like Christmas coming early.
