US Congressman Sablan, representing the Northern Mariana Islands, responded to a USCIS decision extending parole for US citizen families.

Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan issued the following statement today after the US Citizenship and Immigration Service announced that its existing policy of granting humanitarian parole to eligible immediate relatives of US citizens in the Northern Mariana Islands will continue until the end of 2016. The policy was due to expire at the end of this year, putting Northern Marianas families with non-US citizens at risk of separation.

โ€œIn our island culture nothing is more important than family. That is why under Commonwealth immigration law the immediate relatives of US citizens were allowed to live here in the Northern Mariana Islands.

โ€œSo, I want to thank USCIS Director Leon Rodriguez for his decision to continue that policy and allowing for families in the Northern Marianas to stay together for another two years.

โ€œI encourage all of our families who have some US and some non-US members to keep working towards a permanent status. USCIS established the parole policy for immediate relatives in 2011 and has now extended the policy twice. But there is no guarantee that parole will continue to be offered after 2016.โ€
