ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport increased by 24.8% in the month of August.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport increased by 24.8% in the month of August. A total of 1,920,934 passengers passed through the airport in August 2014, compared with 1,538,632 in the same month in 2013.

Aircraft movement in August 2014 was also on the rise, reaching 13,395 movements โ€“ a 15.4% increase over the 11,608 movements that took place in August 2013. Cargo activity in August 2014 increased to 66,215 tonnes, a 9.9% increase when compared to August 2013.

The figures were a combination of residents flying back from overseas holidays in time for the beginning of the school season and a general increase in tourism and business travel to the UAE. The airport is also one of the fastest growing aviation hubs in the region with access to over 90 destinations around the world.โ€ The top five destinations from Abu Dhabi in August were Bangkok, Heathrow, Doha, Manila, and Bahrain. The top five routes accounted for 15% of all traffic.

Abu Dhabi hotels also recording the best August guest arrivals to date with the number of people checking into the emirateโ€™s accommodation last August rising 24% on August last year. According to the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, 306,890 guests stayed in Abu Dhabiโ€™s 156 hotels and hotel apartments last August and UK guests grew 36% year-on-year, up to 14,437 from 10,639.
